The Builders of the Mounds

Bear Mound - Devil's Lake, Baraboo, Wisconsin -

Five hundred years or so ago, Wisconsin's landscape was peppered with thousands of effigy mounds. Today just a small fraction of those remain. This effigy mound although it was "preserved" within the park at Devil's lake gives proof to the fact that more needs to be done because this one is hard to even define what it is anymore.

Please - if you do visit these mounds, treat them with respect. Do not walk on them, and ask others not to as well. Let's try to allow the following generations to admire these incredible works and to learn from them about a time when it was believed that the water spirit and the thunderers did battle at this place we call Devil's Lake.
