The Builders of the Mounds
Man-Mound Effigy Mound
near Baraboo,
Sauk County, Wisconsin

The Man-Mound was probably the most
impressive mound in all the effigy mounds we visited in Wisconsin.

Historical Society
This mound was the largest we saw at
200-some feet long I believe and because of road construction, it was
cut off at the knees. Again - preservation is something that can be seen
here to have it's limits...

Below you can clearly see the head at
the left, then shoulder, chest and arm as you look right from that
spot.... |

I will tell you that I believe it
is a water panther (spirit) in man's form, (which from what I have read,
water spirits were believed to be able to do.) I believe that because of the
cat-like design (paws not hands, etc) as well as the horns. But hey -
feel free to come up with your own theory...because nobody knows for
sure!
