The Builders of the Mounds

Intaglio (Carved) Water Panther Effigy Mound

The "Water Panther" or Water Spirit effigy mound that we visited was actually in the outskirts of town on Madison, WI.

Unlike the other mounds that we visited in Wisconsin, this mound was actually "carved out" instead of built up. When I asked a Native Indian as to why these types of mounds were made, she told me that all mounds were representing what they believed was easily translated in Christian terms to a certain part of our Lord's Prayer, "on earth as it is in heaven." I will leave you to ponder what that could mean...

At any rate, again, you will see how endangered this mound is as well. It looks as if it is really just someone's side yard along a street and beer cans and debris are all over. But we were not deterred and did the video anyway.

I was glad that we did because the mound itself really was impressive, and the shapes are so very clear even 1000 years after it was created.

Panther Intaglio (carved) Mound

As opposed to the effigy mounds that we are used to seeing, this is the only "intaglio" effigy mound left in existence. It can still be seen on the outskirts of Madison, Wisconsin. To learn more about these mounds, visit the Wisconsin Historical Society website.
