The Builders of the Mounds

Devil's Lake, Wisconsin

Devil's Lake in Wisconsin is entwined in Ho-Chunk ( Winnebago ) legends that include the story of a great battle of the Thunderbirds and the Waterspirits. When we visited this lake in July 2006, it really struck me that there were literally around 50-60 turkey vultures soaring on every cliff above us. The turkey vultures not only look ancient but are highly revered by the Native Indians, and I wonder if they are not believed to be the birds that inspired the legends of the Thunderbirds. The other physical clue that I saw was the huge boulders everywhere that the ancients claimed are remnants of that great battle.
