SPANISH HILL

Shots From OUR Past

This is the mansion that was south east of the hill...Earliest record indicates a John Merkle who on death divised ownership to son John D. Merkle, who then conveyed the property to Louisa M. (Merkle) Storms (John Merkle's wife) on Jan 14, 1890.  Subsequently ownership passed down to Harry and Cora Storms.  As the records are hard to follow in terms of lot lines and markers, there are indications the original size was perhaps 100 acres.

See the picture below to see where it was...

The mansion that was located below Spanish Hill (southeast corner) - and I be;ieve ot burnt down in 1963.

Donated by H. Farley, Bradford County Historical Society

This picture was in the July 1950 National Geographic, page 84.(It was donated by Wanda Husick.) The shot is a strange angle that we don't normally see too many pictures from, Shepard Hills golf course in Waverly, just below O'Brien's. This is because the north end is has those extra rolling hills that block the view of the perfect steep sides and the flat ten acres. Note the man in the white shirt pointing at Spanish Hill.

The Long and Winding Road...

A VERY Cool shot of the Trolley car that ran between Waverly, Sayre, and Athens...These guys had to keep the ice off the rails...note the pick! Harry Storms is on the right. Harry owned the mansion and farm (shown at the top of this page.) below Spanish Hill in the early 1900's...Harry A. Storms married a Cora M. Storms.  They sold off the farm in several deeds.  Among them, Hornell Gravel Co., Richard and Clara Liddiard, The Pike's, and the Morleys were the grantees.  The Gravel company got the hill, and they were the last owners before it went up for auction in 1945 for back taxes. Richard Liddiard won the hill at that time in the auction, and out bid Elsie Murray for the Tioga Point Museum, who had plans to make it a State Park...the rest is history...

Ok - I know this is a stretch as a connection to the hill, but I just love this article! The same Harry Storms that I reference above is a "main character" in the following article - that I just love!

Hey - every site should have a fish story, don't you think???

Even better - - this one didn't get away!

Note the yardstick on top of the ice!!!!
