Missing Markers

This image was donated by Jim Bentley (JR) in Sayre, PA.  He grew up right below the Hill, and has spent many years in his boyhood exploring up there (lucky guy!)  These are his words about  when he found it and what he has learned about it...

"I took the picture sometime around 1984-85, I had just bought a new 35mm. camera and was taking pictures of just about everything. The location I photographed the marker was actually on the top of the hill. If you were to stand in front of Jesse Harris's house and look straight up the front of the hill, about  5-10 yards in from the edge you would have the approximate location of the marker. I have been told that it isn't the original, that was destroyed in the 50's when somebody rolled it down the hill. That, I'm not to sure about, although I know the monument I remember had concrete under it to keep it there. I think the last time I actually had seen it was in 1989. " - Jim Bentley

Interestingly - I have said before that the two following photos seem to show different monuments up there...look at them and you'll see what I mean...But the one that is in this photo above looks like the ORIGINAL - doesn't it?

(look at the size and shape of the two below - the one on the second photo looks like it is SQUARE - shaped...not elongated)

To see the marker in pictures from years passed - view the pictures below:

300th year Anniversary of the Brule Trip (1615) Recognized and Marker Dedicated: (the original)

"Mr. Heverly, the Librarian of the Society, had charge of the ceremony of unveiling the marker and made brief but fitting remarks.  A Civil War veteran of Pennsylvania was stationed at the south side of the marker and a veteran from the state of New York was stationed at the north of the marker.  Each of these veterans at the signal, grasped a flag on staff, which covered the marker and raised them aloft, thus crossing flags as the marker uncovered."

(1930's?) "Abner C. Wright, acting President of the Chemung County Historical Society, points out to Clark Wilkes, acting secretary of the society (on Mr. Wrights left) and to Ezra Lain, trustee,  the marker on the site of the of the Indian Town Carantouan...the marker was erected on (Spanish Hill) in 1915 by the Bradford County Historical Society. ...evidences of the fortifications still remain..."

- provided by the Chemung County Historical Society.

But where are these markers now?

If you know of it's location - please contact Henry Farley of the Bradford County Historical Society so that we can collect and preserve this piece of our history!
