Joe Elsbree

Joe Elsbree and his wife Ruth called me recently and asked me to come over and fieldwalk on one of their fields with them.

Joe was nice enough to tell me about his family and about field that they had brought me to had been a place where many arrowheads had been found, and there has been "black earth" that many years of plowing has never erased.

Joe tells me that  in 1945 when the hill went up for auction (when Liddiard had the winning bid,)  Joe's grandfather was also at the auction trying to win it for the Bradford County Historical Society.

It never ceases to amaze me how many families' histories have been touched by Spanish Hill in one way or another. It was a pleasure meeting Joe and Ruth and their family, and being able to share some of their collection with you here.

This is the group fieldwalking in the field.

This is the blackened earth that many years of plowing has not erased...I am told that this is evidence of a place where a great fire burnt for a long time probably centuries ago by the artifacts that are found here.

If you cannot see this - move your mouse over the picture below...

This is what the ground looks like up close, still chunks of burnt wood and earth there...
