Clair Campbell

Clair Campbell contacted me via this website and invited me to come see his collection. Wow. He has been collecting for the past 25 years, and has built up quite a significant collection.

In fact, Clair is a proud owner of one of the handful of Clovis points found in Bradford County, PA.

But one of the things that most impressed me about Clair's collection, was his organization of it. He has, in fact, a better organized system than some museums that I have been to!

Note: All items shown in Clair's collection are form Milan PA - (refer to his map on page 1)

One of the handful of CLOVIS points found in Bradford County, PA can be found in Clair Campbell's collection.

Clovis points were made more than 11,000 years ago over much of North America by "Paleo"-Indian hunters. These hunters stalked such game as mammoths in the closing centuries of the Ice Age. We know this because several archeological digs that have revealed mammoth skeletons also have Clovis points located in those remains.

One of the identifying features of a Clovis point is that they hollowed out groove at it's base to lay the shaft into it.

This is the side with the groove in the base:

This is an illustration of how the point would have been mounted upon a shaft.
