ELLSWORTH COWLES
Here is Ellsworth's first draft of the above illustration:
And here is another illustration by Ellsworth:
Dick - (Ellsworth's son told me about this pot - in fact he showed me a picture of it...Ellsworth found this pot (on Spanish Hill I think) - However - it was in a ton of pieces. Well - as Dick told me - Ellsworth had patience, and he LOVED puzzles...and he actually got the base part together and then had a mold made for him to fit the rest of the pieces into. Well, in spending so much time with this pot, Ellsworth came up with the story of how it could have been broken. And the above illustration tells that story: That the fort was being attacked and the Indians used this pot full of hot water to drop on their enemies head! No matter how the pot met it's demise, this story tells me that Ellsworth was indeed someone whom I very much would have like to have met. I "happened a crossed" the following editorial in the PA Archeologist (April 1933) that had the above illustration and smiled as I thought about Ellsworth with that pot. Maybe - you that visit this site may smile at yourself as you read the following text as well, I know I did.
Note - this page will print nicely in landscape mode. <Back to ELLSWORTH COWLES main page
